We all knew this would happen when the first news arrived that Amoeba was coming to Los Angeles. How does a little independent record store stay afloat when mega-stores like Amoeba come in and swipe your business? They don't. Rhino is closing any day now. Aron's will probably stay open until early March so they can liquidate their stock.
The closing of Aron's is really heartbreaking. My entire musical world depended on what they had in stock every weekend. I bought my first Plug, Oiler, and Pavement 7" records there in High School. They would sell tons of cool flexis and hard to find cassette demos of bands like Loom and Lowercase. And remember those top-notch instore signings and performances from bands like My Bloody Valentine, Shonen Knife, and Lush? I haven't been there in probably 10 years and should go back for old time's sake. Personally, Aron's was undoubtedly the mecca of record stores. I'm sad to see it go.
